CHIDAMBARAM: A shocking case of honour killing unfolded in T. Madapuram near Chidambaram on Friday (June 27, 2025), where a 52-year-old man brutally murdered his daughter for wanting to marry a man of her choice.
Police identified the accused as Arjunan, who lived with his wife and two children. His daughter, Abitha (27), was a part-time teacher at a private school in Kattumannarkovil and was in a relationship with Murugan (28) from Veeranatham.
Despite repeated objections from her family, Abitha stood firm on her decision to marry Murugan. On Friday, a heated confrontation took place between the father and daughter. In a fit of rage, Arjunan allegedly slit Abitha’s throat. She died on the spot before any help could reach.
Following the incident, police registered a murder case and took Arjunan into custody. Investigations are underway to determine if any other family members were complicit or had prior knowledge of the attack.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and sparked fresh concerns over honour-related violence and the right to choose one’s partner.
