Kozhikode: Inspired by the idea that no child should fall behind due to poor arithmetic skills, Dr Thomas Joseph and his daughter Amy are on a mission to transform math learning. Their free training initiative, ‘MyLQ’, launched on Teacher’s Day in 2022, aims to equip underprivileged children with essential arithmetic skills through a 30-day module of just 30 minutes a day.

Operating from Ottapplackal House near Chevayur Kirthad, the duo has already conducted sessions in 15 Kozhikode Corporation schools under the name ‘Ganitham Madhuram’ (Mathematics is sweet). Their focus: help students, especially post-pandemic, who’ve moved to higher classes without mastering basics up to Class 4.

The program delivers powerful results—reducing the time taken to solve 15 problems from 17 minutes to just 1–4 minutes, even among children with disabilities. The team also works with adult learners and tracks every student’s progress meticulously through data analysis.

Dr Thomas, a former IIM and IIT professor and expert in Business Policy and Strategy, leads the initiative alongside Amy, a management professional. Together, they believe that math speed is a crucial life skill—not just for exams but also for success in careers and business.
