A 46-year-old man has been taken into custody for allegedly hurling acid at a 17-year-old boy, just days after his underage daughter died by suicide, reportedly following a breakup with the boy. The shocking incident came to light on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

According to Rahul Gupta, Superintendent of Police (North Goa), the accused, who hails from Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district, launched the attack on Monday morning. The victim, a school-going teenager, was waiting at a bus stop in Mapusa town when the accused approached him and splashed acid.

The boy sustained burns covering nearly 30% of his body and was rushed to a hospital. Doctors have confirmed that he is currently in a stable condition.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the girl and the victim were in a relationship while attending the same school. The police stated that the girl’s father blamed the boy for her tragic death and decided to take matters into his own hands.

The accused confessed during interrogation that he had stolen a five-litre canister of acid from his workplace in Goa on Friday. He had concealed it in the storage compartment of his scooter and waited for an opportunity to strike.

Police have registered a case against the man under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and invoked section 8(2) of the Goa Children’s Act for crimes against minors.

The case has triggered widespread outrage and renewed calls for stronger monitoring of acid sales and school safety.
