A 26-year-old student at IIT Bombay, identified as Rohit Sinha from Delhi, allegedly died by suicide in the early hours of Saturday, sending shockwaves across the campus.
The incident occurred at around 2:30 a.m., when Rohit reportedly jumped from the terrace of his hostel building. A fellow resident, who was on a call on the same terrace at the time, witnessed the tragic event and alerted others. Rohit was immediately rushed to Hiranandani Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Rohit was a final-year student enrolled in the Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science program.
The Powai Police have filed a case and launched a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are examining possible motives and have begun speaking with fellow students and staff for further insight.
In an official statement, the institute expressed deep sorrow, saying,
“The untimely passing of Mr. Rohit Sinha has left the entire IIT Bombay community in grief. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones and pray they find strength in this difficult time.”
