Noida: An FIR has been registered against e-commerce giant Amazon for hurting the “Hindu sentiments” by putting rugs and toilet seat covers with pictures of Hindu Gods for sale on its US website.
A complaint was filed by Vikas Mishra at Noida’s Sector 58 police station for allegedly promoting enmity between different groups on religious grounds.
Vikas said that the foreign company regularly puts up products on its website that hurt the sentiments of the Hindus. “This can lead to communal tension in our country at any given time.Therefore we request that strict action be taken against the company so that such incidents are not repeated and Hindus can lead a peaceful, proud and dignified life,” he said.
Circle Officer Piyush Kumar Singh said that an FIR was registered under Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and added that the matter is being probed.
It can be recalled that an online campaign #BoycottAmazon took social media by storm on Thursday, May 16, as multiple users expressed their anger accusing the online retail company of hurting the Hindus’ sentiments.
Multiple users took to Twitter to question the need to sell toilet seat covers, rugs and floor mats bearing images of Hindu Gods.
Assuring that the products were being taken down from the store, an Amazon spokesperson said that all sellers must follow the company’s selling guidelines and those who do not comply will be subject to action, including a potential removal of their account, PTI reported.
