Mumbai: A fire broke out at a high-rise commercial building on SV Road in Mumbai on Thursday morning, fire officials said. The blaze was reported at around 10.50 am at the JNS Business Center, Behrampada, near Gandhi School in Jogeshwari West. The fire brigade declared it a Level-II fire call.
“No injuries have been reported so far,” an official confirmed. Fire teams are currently on site, working to contain the flames and carry out rescue operations.
Blaze contained to upper floors
The fire has been largely contained to the 9th through 12th floors of the 13-storey glass-fronted building. Flames were visible along the building’s façade, prompting firefighters wearing breathing apparatus to conduct rescue operations for anyone trapped inside.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and authorities are investigating the incident.
Previous high-rise fire in Navi Mumbai
Earlier this week, a major fire broke out in a 12-storey residential building at Raheja Residency in M G Complex, Sector 14, Vashi, shortly after midnight on Monday. Four people, including an elderly woman and a family of three, were killed. Ten other residents were hospitalised after suffering from suffocation.
Police identified the deceased as Sundar Balakrishnan, 44, his wife Pooja Rajan, 39, and their six-year-old daughter Vedika, who lived on the 12th floor. The fourth victim, 84-year-old Kamala Jain, was bedridden and lived with her son’s family on the 10th floor, where the fire is believed to have started.
Authorities are yet to determine the cause of that blaze. Shashikant Chandekar, senior inspector at Vashi police station, said, “Only after the electrical safety department officials submit their report will the further course of action be decided.”
Fire safety concerns
The recent spate of high-rise fires in Mumbai has reignited concerns about building safety standards and adherence to fire regulations. Authorities continue to investigate the incidents to prevent further tragedies.
