In a dramatic early morning rescue, a 24-year-old man was saved from the sluice gate of Mundali barrage in Cuttack on Friday, after allegedly attempting to take his own life. The man, identified as Vikram Tudu from Dhenkanal, was spotted by local fishermen around 6 AM, walking dangerously along the barrage while donning a khaki police uniform.

Recognizing the imminent risk, the fishermen swiftly alerted the local police and fire services. Responding promptly, a team of firefighters launched a tense, hour-long operation, eventually pulling Tudu to safety.

Baranga police station IIC, Devendra Swain, stated, “Our fire-fighting team successfully rescued him after a coordinated effort. He appeared mentally distressed and has been shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. His family has been informed.”

Preliminary inquiry revealed that Tudu had parked his vehicle near the barrage before making his way towards the sluice gate. While the motive behind his actions remains unclear, police are continuing their investigation to understand the full circumstances.

This timely intervention highlights how community vigilance and quick action can prevent potential tragedies.
