Navi Mumbai: Navi Mumbai’s political equations witnessed a significant churn late on Tuesday night as five former municipal corporators from the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Congress defected to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. The development, coming exactly a month ahead of the long-delayed civic elections, is being seen as a major setback for the opposition and a strategic boost for the ruling dispensation in the city.

The induction took place in Thane at a late-night event in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde. The gathering was organised by Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske and also attended by transport minister Pratap Sarnaik. Senior party leaders described the move as part of the Sena’s aggressive push to consolidate its civic base before elections to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), which are expected after a gap of nearly a decade.

MK Madhavi’s defection seen as biggest blow

The most politically significant defection was that of MK Madhavi, a four-time corporator from Airoli and a prominent Shiv Sena (UBT) leader in Navi Mumbai. Madhavi had contested the 2024 Assembly elections as a Sena (UBT) candidate and was regarded as a key organiser of the party in the city.

Madhavi joined the Shinde-led Shiv Sena along with several members of his family who also have a strong municipal footprint. His wife Vinaya Madhavi and son Karan Madhavi, both former corporators, switched sides as well. Karan is considered close to Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray and had actively participated in party campaigns in recent years. Madhavi’s daughter-in-law, Tejashree, who is expected to contest the upcoming civic elections, also joined the party.

Madhavi’s decision is seen as particularly damaging for Sena (UBT), as he had stayed loyal to the party even during the 2022 split of the undivided Shiv Sena. During that turbulent period, he faced police cases and was even externed, but continued to stand with the Uddhav Thackeray faction. His loyalty was rewarded with an Assembly ticket in 2024, though he lost the election to BJP leader Ganesh Naik, his former mentor.

Congress loses key Belapur leader

The Congress also suffered a notable setback with the defection of Poonam Patil, former corporator from Belapur and president of the Navi Mumbai Congress district unit. Patil joined the Shiv Sena along with her husband Mithun Patil and brother-in-law Amit Patil, who is also a former Congress corporator.

Poonam Patil is the daughter of NCP city chief Namdeo Bhagat, adding another layer of political significance to the switch. Her exit further weakens the Congress’s already diminished municipal presence in Navi Mumbai.

Interestingly, Poonam Patil follows a trend seen over the past few years, where several former Congress leaders from Navi Mumbai, including past city presidents, have defected to rival parties, mostly the BJP. This has steadily eroded the Congress’s organisational strength at the civic level.

Reasons cited for the switch

Explaining his decision, MK Madhavi said the move was driven by practical considerations related to development and the interests of party workers in his ward. “For my workers in my ward, and for the development of the ward, I have joined the party. I want to work under the leadership and guidance of our Shiv Sena leader,” he said.

At the same time, Madhavi sought to reassure former colleagues by stating that his respect for Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray, former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and Aaditya Thackeray remained unchanged.

Poonam Patil did not make a detailed public statement, but party sources indicated that dissatisfaction over the Congress’s prospects in the upcoming civic polls and uncertainty over leadership played a role in her decision.

Shinde projects strength, development agenda

Welcoming the new entrants, Eknath Shinde said the defections reflected growing confidence in his leadership and the governance model of the Shiv Sena-led Mahayuti government. “Madhavi has been a party worker for many years. Poonam Patil’s entry with other former corporators will strengthen our party in the Belapur area,” Shinde said.

He emphasised that the Shiv Sena’s focus remained on development and delivery. “Shiv Sena’s agenda is development. There is a Mahayuti government of like-minded parties in the state and at the Centre. That is why Maharashtra has the benefit of a double-engine government,” he added.

Impact on civic election dynamics

The defections are being seen as a serious blow to both Sena (UBT) and the Congress in Navi Mumbai, where opposition parties have struggled to retain senior leaders and finalise strong ward-level panels after a prolonged gap in civic elections.

For the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, the latest realignment strengthens its position at a time when it is expected to be in a direct contest with the BJP in Navi Mumbai. While both parties are part of the Mahayuti alliance at the state level, clarity on a local alliance or seat-sharing arrangement for the civic polls is still awaited. In the meantime, both the Shiv Sena and the BJP have been competing to attract as many former corporators as possible to bolster their organisational strength.
