Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske issued a stern warning to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra after the latter took a jibe at Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a comedy show in Mumbai. Kamra’s comments, which included a dig at Shinde’s rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray, quickly went viral, triggering a strong reaction from the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction).
What Did Kunal Kamra Say?
During his performance at the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai, Kamra addressed the political turbulence in Maharashtra. In a viral video, he subtly mocked the political division, saying, “Shiv Sena first came out of the BJP, then Shiv Sena came out of Shiv Sena. NCP came out of NCP, they gave nine buttons to one voter… everyone got confused.” He further sang a parody about Shinde’s stronghold in Thane, referring to him as a “gaddar” (traitor) without explicitly naming him. Kamra’s video garnered over 360,000 views on X (formerly Twitter).
Naresh Mhaske’s Reaction
Naresh Mhaske, a Shiv Sena MP from the Shinde faction, accused Kamra of being a “paid performer” hired by Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) to target Eknath Shinde. “Kunal Kamra is a hired comedian, and he is making comments on our leader for some money. Let alone Maharashtra, Kunal Kamra cannot freely go anywhere in India. Shiv Sainiks will show him his place,” Mhaske told ANI. He warned that Kamra would receive a “befitting reply” and would eventually be forced to apologize for his remarks. Mhaske also emphasized that Shiv Sena follows the ideology of Balasaheb Thackeray, and no one would be allowed to disrespect their leadership.
Vandalism at the Comedy Club
Following the video’s release, Shiv Sena workers from the Shinde faction reportedly vandalized the Habitat Comedy Club in Khar, where Kamra’s performance was held. Property was damaged, and a warning was issued to Kamra for continuing his criticism. While the police are investigating the incident, no formal complaint has been filed by the comedy club as of yet.
Political Backlash and Support
Kamra received backing from several political leaders, including Sanjay Raut, a Shiv Sena UBT MP, who shared the comedian’s video on X, writing, “Kunal ki kamal, Jai Maharashtra.” Priyanka Chaturvedi, another Shiv Sena UBT MP, also supported Kamra, referencing Voltaire in her defense of free speech: “Dear Kunal, stand strong. The man and the gang you exposed will go after you… I will defend to death your right to speak your mind.”
On the other hand, Mhaske remained resolute in his stance, reiterating that Kamra would face consequences for his comments. He stressed that Kamra would not be allowed to move freely in Maharashtra or anywhere in India unless he apologized.
Conclusion
The situation has sparked a wider debate over freedom of speech and political satire, with Kamra at the center of a storm involving humor, political rivalry, and freedom of expression in the volatile Maharashtra political landscape.
