Poonch: Torrential rainfall triggered flood-like conditions in the Mendhar sub-division of Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Friday, disrupting normal life and prompting emergency rescue operations.

Rising water levels in rivers, streams and low-lying areas led to widespread waterlogging, with several villages affected as floodwaters entered homes and submerged agricultural fields.

Rescue teams evacuate stranded residents

As reports emerged of people stranded in inundated areas, police teams rushed to the affected locations and launched rescue operations.

Officials said around 25 people were safely evacuated from vulnerable areas.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Imran Rashid said the administration was closely monitoring the situation and taking all necessary measures to ensure public safety.

“About 25 people have been rescued so far. Several fields have been submerged, and water has entered some houses. The administration is closely monitoring the situation, and people have been advised to remain cautious,” he said.

Heavy rain disrupts daily life

Continuous rainfall severely affected daily life across the Mendhar region, with overflowing streams cutting off access to several areas and damaging farmlands.

Residents reported panic as the rain continued throughout the day, raising fears of further flooding if weather conditions worsen.

Authorities said vulnerable locations are being monitored round the clock, while relief and rescue teams remain on standby to respond to any emergency.

Administration issues safety advisory

The district administration has urged residents living near rivers, streams and other low-lying areas to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel until the weather improves.

People have also been advised to contact the local control room immediately in case of emergencies as rescue agencies continue to monitor the evolving situation.
