A dramatic video of a food delivery robot being smashed by a speeding train has gone viral on social media, reigniting debates around the safety of autonomous delivery technology. The incident occurred on January 15 in Florida after the robot became stuck on railway tracks moments before a Brightline train passed through.

Robot stuck for several minutes

The robot was operated by Coco, a firm that provides autonomous food delivery services across parts of the United States. The incident was filmed by Guillermo Dapelo, who said the robot had been stranded on the tracks for nearly 15 minutes.

According to Dapelo, an Uber Eats delivery executive spotted the robot and contacted the company, but before assistance could arrive, the train barreled through and destroyed the machine.

Company responds after video goes viral

In a statement issued after the video gained traction, Coco said the robot experienced a rare hardware failure while crossing the tracks. The company stressed that safety remains its top priority, noting that its robots operate at pedestrian speeds and are monitored in real time by human safety pilots.

Coco added that it was reviewing the incident carefully to prevent similar failures in the future, while expressing relief that no human or vehicle was involved.

Growing presence, growing concerns

Food delivery robots have become increasingly common in parts of South Florida, including Fort Lauderdale, Brickell, downtown Miami and Miami Beach. However, Thursday’s incident has once again highlighted concerns about how autonomous machines interact with complex urban infrastructure such as railway crossings.

Similar incidents elsewhere

Earlier this month, a separate viral clip showed a self-driving vehicle operated by Waymo stopping on light rail tracks in Phoenix, Arizona, forcing a passenger to exit the car. Transit operator Valley Metro confirmed that incident, attributing it to ongoing construction and recent changes to the rail network.

As automation expands globally, such incidents underline the need for tighter safeguards and better coordination between autonomous systems and public transport infrastructure.
