A viral video showing a dozen men carrying assault rifles, including AK-47s, while playing football in conflict-ridden Manipur has raised alarm on social media. The players, dressed in fluorescent green T-shirts and black shorts, can be seen casually displaying their weapons while kicking a ball around. The video has caught the attention of the Meitei Heritage Society, which expressed concern over the open display of sophisticated firearms during the tournament. The society posted on X, urging authorities to investigate whether the event was connected to Kuki militants.
The footage, initially shared on Instagram by Manipur influencer Nampi Romeo Hansong, first surfaced on January 20 at the Nohjang Kipgen Memorial Playground, located 30 km from Imphal. In the video, the players are clearly visible carrying AK-47s and American-made M series rifles. Although a follow-up video shows the same individuals without their weapons, the initial footage has sparked significant debate.
The controversy coincides with ongoing tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which have been embroiled in conflicts since May 2023 over issues such as land rights and political representation. The Meitei Heritage Society’s call for an investigation into the incident highlights growing concerns about escalating violence and armed groups in the region.
