New Delhi: Former president Pranab Mukherjee died on Monday, August 31, at the Army Research and Referral Hospital. He was 84 years old.

The news was confirmed by his son Abhijit.

“With a Heavy Heart, this is to inform you that my father Shri Pranab Mukherjee has just passed away in spite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital and prayers duas and prarthanas from people throughout India! I thank all of You Folded hands,” his son Abhijit Mukherjee tweeted.

It can be recalled that the former president was admitted to the hospital in Delhi Cantonment on August 10 at 12.07 PM for an emergency brain surgery for the removal of a blood clot. He later developed a lung infection.

He had also tested positive for COVID-19. His health kept deteriorating after that and he slipped into a coma a few days ago. He was hospitalised for the past 21 days and was in a critical condition.

A health bulletin on Monday morning said that he was in a deep coma and on ventilator support.

Pranab Mukherjee was the 13th president of India between 2012 and 2017.
