A family holiday in Goa ended in unimaginable tragedy on Saturday night when a fire swept through a nightclub in Arpora, killing four members of the same family within minutes. Bhavana Joshi, the sole survivor, escaped after her husband pushed her to safety, moments before flames engulfed the club.
A night meant for celebration turns catastrophic
The family of five — Bhavana, her husband Vinod Kumar, and her three sisters Anita, Saroj, and Kamala — had travelled from Ghaziabad and Delhi for a short break that began on 4 December. On Saturday evening, they visited Birch by Romeo Lane, a nightclub in Arpora, expecting a night of music and celebration. Within 15 minutes, everything changed.
According to police, flames tore through the venue shortly after the group entered. As panic erupted, Vinod pushed Bhavana through the club’s main entrance, enabling her to stumble outside coughing and disoriented. But as she reached safety, Vinod turned back inside — his wife’s sisters were still trapped in the inferno.
He never returned.
A survivor left alone
Outside, Bhavana repeatedly dialled her husband’s phone. It rang again and again as rescuers worked inside the charred structure. When Vinod’s body was eventually brought out, her phone was still in her hand, still calling.
Hotel staff and bystanders tried to comfort her, but the magnitude of the loss was overwhelming. A trip meant to create memories had ended at a police barricade outside a burnt shell of a building.
The family had been staying at a hotel in Baga, unaware that a leisure outing would become the darkest night of their lives.
Families race to Goa in grief
Relatives rushed to Goa through the night. Many were too shocked to grasp the full extent of the tragedy.
“Their children are waiting at home. All their relatives are waiting too,” one family member said. “We haven’t told them that all four have died. We said two sisters are dead and the other two are missing. We want to take their bodies back.”
Another relative struggled to hold up a phone showing a photograph of one of the victims. “She is completely charred. She has no skin left,” he said, trembling.
The distress among family members mirrored the shock felt across Goa, where residents and first responders witnessed the devastation firsthand.
Investigation underway into nightclub fire
Preliminary reports suggest the blaze may have been triggered by a suspected cylinder blast, though officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has vowed strict action and comprehensive investigation, noting that safety lapses will not be tolerated.
Police have cordoned off the site, and forensic teams are assessing structural damage, fire patterns and possible negligence. Authorities are also reviewing licensing and compliance records of the nightclub.
A story of love and sacrifice
While the investigation continues, Bhavana is left to grapple with a profound personal loss — her husband and three sisters gone within minutes. Those who knew the family described Vinod as calm, dependable and deeply protective. His final act, returning into the burning building to save his sisters-in-law, has been described by relatives as an extraordinary act of courage and love.
The children who remain at home will now look to Bhavana to recount the final moments of their parents’ lives — how the holiday ended in silence, and how love chose to walk into the flames.
