Malappuram: Just days after a major road collapse shook public confidence, yet another structural issue has emerged on the newly constructed six-lane NH 66 near Valyaparambu, Thalappara. A fresh crack was spotted on the retaining wall blocks in an elevated section of the road, raising immediate alarm and forcing authorities to suspend traffic through the stretch.

To make matters worse, a culvert in the same area has dangerously sunk, intensifying safety concerns for commuters. The damaged spot lies barely 3 km from Kooriyad, where a previous highway collapse had already triggered outrage.

Local residents and political outfits responded swiftly. Muslim League workers reached the site and staged a protest, demanding accountability for the faulty construction. Members of the Youth League also demonstrated at the scene.

Senior leader and MLA P.K. Kunhalikutty, who visited the site, expressed grave concern:

“This isn’t just a construction flaw—it’s a failure in ensuring public safety. Inspections must be conducted without delay. People deserve to travel without fear. The state government cannot escape responsibility.”

He further warned that continued inaction would lead to intensified opposition-led protests.

With recurring infrastructure failures in quick succession, public confidence in the quality of highway expansion work in Kerala is eroding fast.
