In a heartwarming gesture of community support and inclusive progress, siblings Nisaan and Nissi — both intellectually challenged — received a custom-designed, accessible home on Saturday at Veliyambam, Pulpally. The house was constructed under the MAGIK Homes initiative by the Different Art Centre (DAC), aimed at creating inclusive living spaces for differently-abled individuals across Kerala.
The siblings, who previously lived in a makeshift shed with their parents Saijan and Joicey, were selected based on DAC’s stringent screening criteria prioritizing families in dire need. The new 600-square-foot residence now offers them dignity, stability, and a safe environment conducive to learning and growth. Both children currently attend Kripalaya Special School in Pulpally.
Renowned poet and lyricist Murukan Kattakada handed over the house keys during a ceremonial event attended by several dignitaries, including Pulppally Panchayat President T.S. Dileep Kumar, Dr. Jomet Kothavazhikal, and DAC Executive Director Gopinath Muthukad. The land for the house was generously donated by Veliyambam resident Kuriakose, reflecting the collective compassion of the local community.
Constructed by Simson Cheenikkuzhy of Jude Constructions, the house features accessibility-focused designs tailored to the siblings’ needs. “Our children always dreamed of a real home. Seeing their happiness is truly priceless,” said an emotional Joicey.
This Wayanad home is the fourth completed under the MAGIK Homes project, following successful handovers in Kasaragod, Idukki, and Malappuram. DAC plans to build one such model home in each of Kerala’s 14 districts.
