The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a nationwide food safety assessment for paneer following alarming surveillance findings in Gujarat. The regulator has directed state food safety commissioners to begin comprehensive testing across the country, with each food safety officer required to collect five specific samples: two packed, two loose, and one milk analogue.
Gujarat’s Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) Commissioner HG Koshia explained, “We alerted the FSSAI about our 2024 Diwali survey, and they took immediate note. We received inspection letters from FSSAI.” The state’s paneer survey is being carried out by 165 inspectors, each collecting five samples as part of a coordinated effort.
This initiative is part of a broader national sampling campaign, with FSSAI expected to consolidate the findings and release a report within a month. Food safety experts are closely monitoring the process, anticipating that the results will shed light on the scale of adulteration issues currently plaguing India’s food supply chain.
