Mangaluru: A 63-year-old man who had allegedly been evading arrest in connection with a 2019 case registered at the Kankanady Town Police Station has been arrested at Mumbai Airport after returning to India from abroad.
The accused, identified as Ashok Narayan (63), a resident of Andheri West, Mumbai, had reportedly remained absconding since the case was registered.
Accused allegedly evaded arrest
According to police, Ashok Narayan failed to appear before the court during the course of the investigation and allegedly changed his residential address to avoid being traced by the authorities.
After repeated efforts to locate him proved unsuccessful, investigators filed a charge sheet against him as an absconding accused.
Look Out Circular led to arrest
During the investigation, police learnt that the accused had travelled overseas. Based on his passport details, Mangaluru City Police secured a Look Out Circular (LOC) through the Office of the Police Commissioner to monitor his arrival in India.
On August 1, immigration authorities intercepted Ashok Narayan at Mumbai Airport when he arrived from abroad. He was subsequently taken into custody.
The following day, personnel from the Kankanady Town Police Station, including Assistant Sub-Inspector Jagadish and staff member Ravikumar, travelled to Mumbai, secured the accused’s custody and produced him before the jurisdictional court.
Investigation to continue
Police said the arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the long-pending case. Further legal proceedings will now continue in accordance with the investigation and court directions.
The Mangaluru City Police reiterated that Look Out Circulars remain an important tool in tracing and apprehending accused persons who attempt to evade the law by travelling overseas.
