TIRUCHY: The spread of ganja in Tiruchy appears far from under control, despite claims of tough enforcement by the police. Between January and May 2025, authorities arrested 45 peddlers across city and rural limits. In comparison, 110 arrests were made throughout 2024, with a seizure of nearly 90 kg of ganja — 40 kg of which was confiscated in June alone.

Sources in the police department say the majority of the seizures involve small-time peddlers carrying quantities ranging from 5 grams to 2 kilograms. The bigger suppliers and core distribution networks remain largely untouched.

Social activists argue that these arrests only scratch the surface. Advocate and activist SR Kishore Kumar of Chintamani said, “Most young users find peddlers online. Arrests happen, but the access to ganja remains unchecked. The deeper network is intact, and the current actions seem more performative than preventive.”

Locals share similar concerns. A shopkeeper in Samayapuram, requesting anonymity, said, “We frequently see young people hanging around TASMAC outlets and temple grounds. The signs of drug use are obvious, but there’s no consistent police presence. We’re afraid to speak up.”

In response, a senior city police officer said awareness drives and enforcement are ongoing, and pointed out that Tiruchy too has seen substantial drug seizures. However, no further details were shared. Meanwhile, Tiruchy SP S Selvanagarathinam was unavailable for comment, though a senior rural officer insisted action is taken during patrols and in response to complaints.
