Garmin devices that feature satellite communication capabilities have recently led to the detention of foreign nationals at Indian airports. A Canadian and a Scottish hiker were detained for carrying Garmin devices, including the Garmin inReach, which operates on satellite networks.
The Scottish hiker, known as ‘Hiker Heather’ on Instagram, shared her ordeal on social media, explaining how she was detained at Delhi Airport for carrying a Garmin inReach. She was informed that the device was illegal in India and was handed over to the police. Despite reaching out to her embassy, she was told they could not intervene with the legal proceedings.
Not all Garmin devices are banned in India; only those with satellite communication technologies, such as the Garmin inReach and Garmin Edge 540, are restricted. These devices are prohibited under the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1933, which regulates the possession of wireless telegraphy apparatus and satellite phones without proper authorization.
Travellers are advised to ensure that any Garmin devices they carry do not include built-in satellite communication features to avoid legal complications in India.
