Bengaluru: A workplace story involving a Gen Z employee has gone viral on social media after they reportedly used their company’s own attendance policy to challenge what many online described as an unfair double standard.
The incident, shared by X user Wolfe (@Alpha101), has sparked widespread discussion about rigid office policies, employee rights and whether organisations should be held to the same standards they expect from their staff.
Employee loses an hour’s pay over 11-minute delay
According to the viral post, the company had recently introduced a strict attendance rule stating that employees arriving 10 minutes or more late would lose pay for an entire hour.
On a Monday morning, the employee reportedly arrived 11 minutes late. Rather than arguing with the manager or contesting the deduction, they accepted the penalty and continued with their work.
At the time, the matter appeared to be over.
Wi-Fi outage changes everything
Later that week, the company’s internet reportedly stopped working for nearly an hour, preventing employees from carrying out their tasks.
Once the connection was restored, management allegedly asked employees to stay back after office hours to compensate for the lost productivity.
Instead of agreeing, the employee calmly packed up to leave.
According to the post, they replied, “By company policy, if an hour can disappear over 11 minutes, then an hour can disappear because your Wi-Fi did too. See you on Monday.”
Internet applauds ‘malicious compliance’
The response quickly went viral, with many social media users describing it as a perfect example of “malicious compliance”—following company rules exactly as written to expose perceived inconsistencies.
Many commenters argued that accountability should work both ways and that organisations should acknowledge their own operational failures just as strictly as they enforce employee policies.
Although the incident cannot be independently verified, it has resonated with thousands of professionals who say it reflects growing concerns about workplace fairness, consistency and respect for employees’ time
