A tragic fire triggered by an electric geyser explosion claimed the life of a 50-year-old man and left his wife injured at their residence in southeast Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin area on Saturday evening, police said.

The incident occurred around 5 pm, when police received a PCR call reporting a major fire inside a house in the locality. A police team and fire personnel rushed to the spot to carry out rescue operations.

House locked from inside

According to police, the house was found locked from the inside, forcing responders to break open the door to gain entry. Thick smoke had filled the premises by the time the rescue team entered the house.

“During the rescue operation, Mohammad Sayed Nizami, the house owner, and his wife, Fida Nizami (45), were found unconscious due to smoke inhalation,” a senior police officer said. Nizami was reportedly in the bathroom at the time of the incident, where the geyser explosion is suspected to have occurred.

Other members of the family, who were present in the house, were safely evacuated without injuries, police added.

Man declared dead, wife under treatment

Both victims were immediately shifted to Mool Chand Hospital for emergency medical care. Doctors declared Mohammad Sayed Nizami dead on arrival, while his wife later regained consciousness and is currently undergoing treatment.

Hospital sources said her condition is stable, though she remains under observation due to smoke exposure.

Probe underway

Police said a case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the fire. Preliminary findings suggest that the blaze was caused by an electric geyser explosion, but officials said technical inspection reports are awaited.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with faulty electrical appliances and the importance of regular safety checks in households.
