The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has issued a stern warning to eateries against jeopardizing public health by selling low-quality food items. The authorities have made it clear that strict actions will be taken against those failing to adhere to food safety regulations.
On Wednesday, surprise inspections were carried out at several flour and sweetmeat shops in the Suraram area under the Quthbullapur Circle in Kukatpally Zone. The officials discovered that several food establishments were preparing food in unhygienic conditions, with low-quality ingredients. During the inspections, it was found that basic food safety guidelines were being violated. For instance, many shops did not comply with essential labeling requirements, including manufacturing and expiry dates. In addition, workers were seen handling food without wearing gloves, which raised serious health concerns.
The owners of the establishments were questioned about the storage of expired goods and other safety breaches. GHMC officials emphasized that public health is their top priority, warning that the consumption of substandard food leads to issues such as food poisoning, particularly among children. They urged the public to be more cautious about eating outside food.
The inspection team, led by officials including additional commissioner (health) Pankaj, food control assistant Muthyam Raju, food safety officer Lakshmi Kantham, and other health officers, stated that these surprise checks would continue to ensure that unsafe food is not sold to the public.
