The Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards harassment and unruly behaviour involving tourists, especially incidents that compromise the safety and dignity of women.

Reacting to a recent case of harassment of a woman tourist that surfaced through a viral video, Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte said such conduct would not be condoned under any circumstances. He stressed that Goa welcomes responsible tourists and will act decisively against those who violate the law or disrespect individuals.

Swift action after viral video

The incident reportedly involved an intoxicated individual at a beach shack in Calangute, who was seen blocking the path of a woman tourist and behaving in an inappropriate and suggestive manner. The video, which circulated widely on social media, caused public concern and prompted immediate official action.

Based on the footage, a formal police complaint was filed, and prompt intervention followed. An FIR has been registered at the Calangute Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including Sections 74, 75 and 79, along with other applicable sections.

Government sends strong message

Minister Khaunte said Goa does not tolerate any behaviour that attempts to outrage the modesty of women. “Goa stands for safety, dignity and responsible tourism. Whatever stringent measures are required to set a clear example will be taken,” he said, adding that the police acted swiftly in the matter.

Tourism Department reaffirms commitment

Director of Tourism Kedar Naik said the department remains fully committed to ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all visitors. He noted that the Tourism Department works closely with local administration and law enforcement agencies to address such incidents without delay.

Any act of harassment or misconduct, he said, will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law to uphold Goa’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination.

The Government of Goa has urged tourists to respect local laws and values and contribute positively to the State’s tourism ecosystem. Authorities reiterated that the safety, dignity and well-being of visitors remain a top priority, and strict action will continue against offenders.
