GOA: Teacher Chandralekha Mestri, who has dedicated 24 years to educating in remote Canacona, has been honored with the Union government’s National Teachers’ Award for 2024. Despite the daily 50km journey to Satyawati Soiru Angle Higher Secondary School in Mashem-Loliem, Mestri has turned her travel time into productive planning sessions, developing numerous science projects and a botanical garden at her school.
Mestri teaches mostly first-generation learners from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, including tribals and students from Karnataka’s fishing community. Her innovative approach includes using her travel time to plan lessons and activities, ensuring her students receive engaging and meaningful education.
She has been recognized for her efforts with 19 individual awards and 22 group project awards, including at the national level. Mestri’s work has exposed her students to various national science fairs, broadening their horizons. Her commitment to education and extracurricular activities exemplifies the dedication needed to inspire and uplift students in challenging circumstances.
Mestri’s previous accolades include the state’s best teacher award in 2021. She attributes her success to her school’s support, family, and the extra effort she puts in beyond class hours, which she believes is essential for achieving exceptional results and building strong bonds with students.
