Kolkata: During the five days of Durga puja, one particular idol grabbed everyone’s attention. The Behala Barisha Club of Kolkata depicted Goddess Durga’s idol along with a migrant mother surrounded by her children.
The idea behind the construction of this idol was to pay tribute to thousands of migrant workers who took up the journey on foot to reach their hometown, amid the lockdown of covid-19. The migrant mother along with her children is depicted walking towards Goddess Durga who is visibly carrying relief materials in her 10 hands.
During the months of long total lockdown where only essentials were permitted the wage workers experienced a tremendous financial crisis as businesses and factories were shut down. When they began running out of money and were unable to afford rent, many of them walked thousands of kilometres from cities to their native places.
Every year, the Kolkata puja pandal comes up with innovative themes to highlight the social issues and celebrates the traditional art form and culture.
