Godwoman defies lockdown rules, brandishes sword at cops, gets arrested

Uttar Pradesh: A self-styled Godwoman brandished sword at the police who came over to stop the religious gathering that she had arranged defying the lockdown norms.

Maa Adi Shakti, the Godwoman was holding a religious meeting at Mehwa Pudwa area of Deoria district in eastern Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.

When he refused to call off the meeting organised as part of the nine-day ongoing Navaratri festival, she and 12 others were nabbed by the police.

Deoria Superintendent of Police Sripat Mishra is quoted in media saying that as per a tip-off some faith-healing was going on at the said spot.

“On reaching the spot, the police appealed to the crowd to return home, telling them that Section 144 (of the CrPC) was in force across the state. But the self-styled godwoman became aggressive,” he said adding that she refused and soon resorted to waving sword at the cops.

The police then used force to disperse the crowd and arrested 13 people, including the woman and her husband.

FIRs (first information reports) under relevant sections have been lodged against all of them and they will be sent to jail, said sources.

The entire country is under 21-day lockdown, put in place after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced it in his address to the nation on Tuesday.
