Gold thieves targeting bus passengers nabbed in Kanniyakumari
Three repeat offenders, including two women, were arrested in Kanniyakumari on Monday for a series of gold thefts targeting passengers on crowded buses. The arrested individuals have been identified as Vijaya (35) and Manju (35), both from Anna Nagar Colony in Pollachi, and M Aravind (29) from Sattur.
Following a surge in complaints from bus travelers reporting missing jewellery, Kanniyakumari SP R Stalin formed a special task force led by Nagercoil ASP Lalith Kumar to investigate the thefts. The probe revealed that the trio specifically targeted commuters in packed buses, using the crowd as cover to steal valuables.
The police recovered 27 sovereigns of stolen gold jewellery along with ₹2.40 lakh in cash. Over the past three months alone, at least 12 cases had been registered involving jewellery theft from buses departing Kanniyakumari.
All three have been taken into custody, and further investigations are underway to trace other possible links or accomplices.
