A touching exchange between a family and Kerala Water Authority (KWA) officials in Kollam has struck a chord with many. When officials arrived at a home near Mundakkal to disconnect the water supply over unpaid dues of ₹2,600, they found no one at home—only a handwritten note by the meter:

“Gone to pay the bill, please don’t disconnect.”

Moved by the sincerity of the message, the KWA team responded in kind, leaving behind their own handwritten reply:

“We had come to disconnect your water supply. However, we are returning after taking your word into confidence.”

Later that day, the family returned and made a partial payment toward the dues. The KWA staff, acknowledging the family’s genuine intent and dependence on piped water, allowed extra time for them to clear the remaining amount.

Officials said the decision to delay disconnection was made to prevent unnecessary hardship, particularly because water reconnections often involve delays and additional procedures.

The compassionate gesture has been widely appreciated as a rare moment of empathy in routine enforcement.
