“Govt Pushes Coffee Sector Growth with ICDP Scheme”

Union Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal, in a written response to the Lok Sabha, highlighted initiatives under the Integrated Coffee Development Project (ICDP). Managed by the Coffee Board, the scheme aims to boost India’s coffee sector through activities such as replantation, quality enhancement, water resource augmentation, and area expansion. These efforts target increased coffee production, better productivity, and improved quality across the country.

The Coffee Board also promotes Indian coffee globally by participating in international trade events and supports value-added coffee exports to raise the profile of Indian beans on the world stage, Goyal shared while responding to MP Kota Srinivasa Poojary of Udupi-Chikkamagaluru.

Addressing a query on regulating the chicory content in coffee blends, the Minister said the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) mandates that coffee in chicory mixtures must constitute at least 51% by mass under the 2011 food safety standards.

Goyal also clarified that coffee crops are excluded from the purview of the SARFAESI Act, ensuring additional protection for coffee growers. This exemption prevents coffee plantations from being used to recover debts under the Act, providing financial security to cultivators.

The government’s concerted efforts aim to uplift the coffee industry, offering both domestic and international support for sustainable growth.
