Coimbatore: Social activist Udumalai Gowsalya, whose first husband, Shankar was hacked to death by her own family members, has found happiness again. On Sunday, December 9, she married musician Sakthi in a simple ceremony with a garland exchange at the head office of Thanthi Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam.

Sakthi completed a diploma course in Paraiattam at the Bharathiar University. According to sources, he has worked extensively to bring about reforms in the field of traditional folk art.

Gowsalya hails from an OBC community and her first husband, Shankar was a Dalit. Her family, however, was unhappy with her choice of spouse.

In March 2016, Shankar was brutally killed by Gowsalya’s family members. The Tiruppur court had later sentenced accused number one, Chinnasamy, Gowsalya’s father to death. However, her mother Annalakshmi and uncle Pandi Durai were freed of all charges.

As Gowsalya was only 19-years-old when she witnessed this barbaric hate crime, she decided to stand her ground and fight against caste violence.

Later, Gowsalya went on to support and aid victims of caste violence.
