A 29-year-old graduate allegedly died by suicide in Tiruvottiyur after financial difficulties reportedly forced him to discontinue his higher education in London.

The deceased has been identified as R Jothimani, son of a retired police sub-inspector.

Financial struggles reportedly caused distress

Police said Jothimani had enrolled in a degree programme at a university in London in 2024. However, he was reportedly forced to return to India last year after completing one year of studies because of financial constraints.

Following the death of his father in 2017, Jothimani had been living with his 67-year-old mother Vasantha at their residence on Kavarai Street in Tiruvottiyur.

According to police sources, Jothimani was determined to complete his education abroad and had reportedly urged his mother to sell their house to arrange funds for his studies.

However, Vasantha refused, stating that selling the property would leave them without a place to live.

Mother found him unresponsive

Police said that after dinner on Tuesday night, Jothimani went to his room as usual.

The following morning, when he did not respond, his mother alerted neighbours for help.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police register case

Tiruvottiyur Police have registered a case and launched further investigation into the incident.

The body has been sent to Stanley Government Hospital for postmortem examination.
