Groom in Rajasthan Sets Powerful Example by Returning Dowry Cash of Rs 5.5 Lakh
In a heartwarming turn of events, a groom from Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer has been receiving widespread praise for his principled stand against dowry practices. Paramveer Rathore, a 30-year-old civil services aspirant, married Nikita Bhati on February 14 in Karaliya village. During the traditional wedding rituals, Rathore was gifted Rs 5,51,000 in cash by his would-be in-laws as part of the ’tilak ceremony.’
However, instead of accepting the dowry, Rathore expressed his dismay at the continued existence of such practices in society. “I was sad to see that dowry practices are still prevalent. I could not immediately reject the money, so I had to carry on with the rituals. But after discussing with my family, we decided to return it,” he explained.
Rathore emphasized the role of educated individuals in bringing about societal change, stating, “If educated people don’t make a change, who will? We must set an example.” His father, Ishwar Singh, a farmer, also supported this decision, saying, “Women are excelling in every field today, and we need to put an end to dowry.”
This act of courage was not only praised by the groom’s family but also by Nikita’s relatives, who acknowledged the significant message it sent to society. The newlyweds, who returned to their village after the wedding, have set a powerful example for others to follow in rejecting outdated and harmful traditions.
