New Delhi: Delhi-NCR is witnessing a rise in H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, along with other respiratory infections amid humid and changing weather conditions.
Several people, including doctors and the head of a government hospital in Delhi, have reportedly tested positive for H1N1 as cases increase across the region. Doctors are also seeing patients with flu-like symptoms, while some have reported falling oxygen levels.
Delhi records sharp rise in H1N1 cases
Delhi has recorded 1,349 H1N1 cases so far this year, compared with 229 during the same period last year. The increase comes amid the monsoon, when respiratory infections can become more common.
H1N1 can cause sudden fever, dry cough, body aches, headache, sore throat, chills and fatigue. Some patients may develop breathing difficulties and low oxygen levels.
Watch for warning signs
Doctors advise people to seek medical attention if they develop breathlessness, chest pain, persistent high fever, confusion, bluish lips or worsening symptoms.
Older adults, young children and pregnant women may face a higher risk of severe illness. People with diabetes, chronic heart or lung conditions and weakened immunity should also remain particularly cautious.
Early treatment can be important
For high-risk patients and those with moderate to severe illness, treatment should be guided by medical professionals. Oseltamivir is most effective when started early, ideally within the first 48 hours, while antibiotics are generally not required unless there is evidence of a secondary bacterial infection.
Simple precautions can reduce spread
As respiratory infections rise, experts advise maintaining hand hygiene, following cough etiquette and avoiding close contact with others when unwell.
Influenza vaccination can also help reduce the risk of infection and complications. People experiencing worsening symptoms should seek medical advice rather than delaying treatment.
