Ongole: A woman died after being trapped in an elevator that suddenly moved with its gate open at a residential apartment complex in Ongole, Andhra Pradesh, in a tragic incident that has raised concerns over lift safety and maintenance.
Woman trapped as lift suddenly moves
The deceased, identified as Vanitha, was travelling in the lift at Surya Towers Apartments with her daughter and grandson.
According to the report, the three had entered the elevator together and were travelling to their floor. After the lift reached the floor, Vanitha’s daughter and grandson stepped out.
However, before Vanitha could exit, the lift reportedly began moving down while its gate was still open.
Caught off guard, she tried to get out but became trapped inside the moving elevator.
Family and residents attempt rescue
Visuals from the incident reportedly show Vanitha’s daughter trying to push the lift gate upwards while calling for help. Residents soon gathered and attempted to rescue her.
They eventually managed to pull Vanitha out of the lift.
She sustained severe injuries in the accident and was immediately taken to a hospital. Despite receiving treatment, she later succumbed to her injuries.
Incident raises lift safety concerns
A video of the incident has since circulated on social media, prompting concerns about the safety and maintenance of elevators in residential buildings.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of lifts, particularly in apartment complexes where residents depend on them every day.
