HC asks UP govt to furnish report on police action during violence over CAA

Lucknow: The Allahabad High Court has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a report on the police action taken during the violence over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) that occured in the state in December last year.

According to a report by NDTV, the court is hearing seven petitions filed in connection with the violence witnessed during the protests over the CAA. It can be recalled that several deaths occurred in the state as a result of the violence, most of which were caused by bullet injuries. The police, however, have admitted to opening fire in only one instance.

The court reportedly asked the UP government to submit a detailed report of the police action. It aslo asked the government if the families of the deceased were given the post-mortem reports.

As per reports, the case will be heard on February 17.

It can be recalled that UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had warned of a “crackdown” if the protesters persisted in their agitation.
