A shocking video of a severely dehydrated and underfed horse collapsing from heatstroke on a Kolkata street has sparked nationwide outrage. The distressing footage, originally shared by PETA India, shows the horse being beaten and dragged by its handler even after collapsing, igniting fierce debate over the exploitation of working animals in urban India.
Tagging Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, PETA demanded the horse be relocated to a sanctuary and horse-drawn carriages be replaced with e-vehicles. “These animals are not tourist attractions. They deserve compassion, not cruelty,” the organisation wrote on X.
Actor Pooja Bhatt joined the call for justice, urging the government to replace the “cruel” practice with humane alternatives. Social media platforms exploded with emotional reactions, with users calling for strict punishment for the handler and systemic reform.
In response to the viral uproar and PETA’s formal complaint, Kolkata Police confirmed that an FIR had been filed under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and appropriate sections of law. The case, registered on April 24, is under investigation, and legal action is being taken.
Authorities confirmed the horse is now under veterinary supervision and receiving necessary medical treatment. PETA praised the swift police action, reiterating, “No being should suffer such cruelty.”
The incident has reignited discussions around outdated animal labour practices and bolstered advocacy for ethical reforms in urban transport systems.
