Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja, who also heads the Regional Transport Authority, has enforced a temporary ban on the movement of heavy vehicles into Kodagu district from July 6 to August 5.
Exemptions have been made for vehicles engaged in government assignments, school and college transport, and public passenger carriers, including multi-axle buses.
The ban aims to protect the lives of residents and travelers and safeguard public infrastructure. The directive, issued using magisterial powers under the Disaster Management Act, Motor Vehicles Act, and Indian Civil Safety Code, will be implemented with strict enforcement.
The restriction applies to:
-
Timber and sand transport vehicles
Goods carriers with a registered weight of 18,500 kg or more
Bullet tankers, ship cargo containers
Long chassis and multi-axle freight trucks
To ensure compliance, police have been instructed to set up checkposts at Kushalnagar and Sampaje, both key entry points on NH-275. Personnel will be stationed around the clock for monitoring. Patrolling teams will also be deployed to prevent violations.
Additionally, the Kodagu police have been given authority to install necessary warning and regulatory signage under the Motor Vehicles Act. Officers from both police and transport departments have been alerted to take prompt legal action against offenders.
The move is a proactive step to ease traffic congestion and prevent potential accidents during the monsoon season.
