A 57-year-old woman was rescued from a precarious situation on the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Trans Harbour Link bridge (also known as Atal Setu) on Friday evening, thanks to the swift actions of a cab driver and the police.
The dramatic rescue was captured on CCTV footage, which has since gone viral on social media. The footage shows the cab driver, identified as 31-year-old Sanjay Yadav, grabbing the woman just as she attempts to jump off the bridge. The incident occurred around 7 pm, as reported by The Times of India.
According to police reports, the woman, a resident of Mulund, had asked Yadav to stop the cab on the bridge under the guise of immersing religious photos into the sea. However, upon stopping, the woman reportedly crossed the bridge’s railing and appeared to be in distress.
The police were alerted after receiving a call about a vehicle stopping on the bridge and a woman crossing the railing. “The Nhava Sheva Traffic Branch Patrolling One received information that a vehicle had halted on the Atal Setu bridge on the road leading to Shelghar Toll Naka, with a woman engaging in suspicious behaviour by crossing the railing,” an unidentified police officer told The Indian Express.
Upon noticing the police, the woman tried to jump into the sea. In a quick response, Yadav grabbed her by her hair to prevent her from falling. Meanwhile, four police constables quickly scaled the railing to assist in the rescue. Their combined efforts ensured the woman’s safety and prevented a possible tragedy.
Following the rescue, the woman was taken to the police station in Navi Mumbai, where her family was notified. Anjum Bagwan, Senior Inspector of Nhava Sheva Police Station, revealed that the family described her as mentally disturbed.
This incident highlights an alarming pattern of distressing events at the Atal Setu bridge. In July, a 38-year-old engineer, struggling with financial stress, had jumped off the bridge. Earlier, in March, a 43-year-old woman also reportedly leapt from the bridge. These incidents underscore the urgent need for mental health support and preventive measures on the bridge.
