New Delhi: The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a unique initiative offering highway users a ₹1,000 FASTag recharge for reporting dirty toilets at toll plazas and other NHAI-maintained facilities. The cleanliness drive, aimed at improving hygiene on national highways, will run until October 31, 2025, according to a statement reported by PTI.

How to claim the FASTag reward

Highway users can participate by uploading geo-tagged, time-stamped images of unclean toilets using the latest version of the ‘Rajmargyatra’ app. Users must also provide details including user name, location, Vehicle Registration Number (VRN), and mobile number.

Each VRN reporting such dirty toilets will be eligible for a ₹1,000 reward, which will be credited to the linked FASTag account. The reward is non-transferable and cannot be redeemed in cash. Importantly, each VRN can claim the reward only once during the campaign period.

Conditions and limitations

Only toilets constructed, operated, or maintained under NHAI jurisdiction qualify for the reward. Toilets at retail fuel stations, dhabas, or other public facilities outside NHAI control are excluded. Additionally, each toilet facility can be reported only once per day; if multiple reports are received for the same location on the same day, only the first valid submission will be considered.

Images must be clear, geo-tagged, and captured via the app. Manipulated, duplicate, or previously reported images will be rejected. Entries will be verified using AI-assisted screening and manual validation wherever necessary.

Objective of the initiative

The initiative forms part of NHAI’s broader efforts to ensure cleanliness and hygiene at public facilities on national highways. By incentivising highway users to actively report substandard toilet conditions, the authority aims to monitor and maintain standards effectively.

The scheme also highlights India’s growing use of digital technology to improve public services. Linking rewards to FASTag accounts not only encourages compliance but also integrates the process with an existing digital infrastructure widely used by highway commuters.

National impact and participation

The campaign covers all national highways across India and seeks participation from millions of highway users. By incentivising active reporting, the NHAI expects a significant improvement in sanitation and timely maintenance of toilet facilities.

Officials have emphasised that this reward-based approach will complement existing efforts by maintenance staff, helping ensure cleaner, safer, and more hygienic public facilities for all commuters.

Conclusion

The FASTag reward scheme for reporting dirty toilets reflects NHAI’s innovative approach to citizen engagement and digital governance. By combining monetary incentives with technology, the initiative encourages public participation in maintaining clean and hygienic national highways, ultimately improving the travel experience for all road users.
