Madhya Pradesh: A well-known snake rescuer met a tragic end in Guna district after a venomous cobra, wrapped around his neck, bit him during a bike ride. The man, identified as Deepak Mahavar, succumbed to the bite despite being administered antivenom as reported by India Today.

A viral video circulating on social media shows Deepak riding his two-wheeler with the cobra draped like a garland. According to eyewitnesses, the footage was captured moments before the fatal bite.

Fatal show of familiarity

Deepak, who worked as a temporary staffer at JP College, was renowned locally for his snake-rescuing skills. Over the years, he had reportedly saved thousands of snakes. He had recently captured a cobra and kept it in a glass container at home, intending to showcase it in a religious procession during the Shravan month.

On the morning of the incident, Deepak took his children to school with the cobra coiled around his neck. During this trip, the snake suddenly bit him. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite receiving antivenom treatment, the delay in getting medical attention proved fatal.

Community in shock

Deepak’s sudden death has left the local community and wildlife enthusiasts in shock. Many who admired his fearlessness are now questioning the risks of handling venomous creatures without proper safety measures.

The tragedy has also sparked debate online, as the viral video raised concerns about glorifying risky behaviour with wild animals. While some hailed him as a brave rescuer, others criticised the move as reckless and avoidable.

A family left behind

Deepak is survived by his two sons, Raunak (12) and Chirag (14). His wife had died earlier, making the children now orphans. Locals have expressed grief and have appealed for support for the boys.

Authorities have reiterated the importance of adhering to wildlife safety guidelines, even for seasoned rescuers. Forest officials have also urged the public not to attempt risky interactions with venomous snakes, particularly during monsoon season when snake activity is high.
