Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala, is currently on death row in Yemen after being found guilty of murdering a Yemeni national in 2018. Her husband, Tomy Thomas, an auto-rickshaw driver from Idukki, is holding onto hope for a “last-minute pardon” as the time ticks down before the sentence is carried out. Last week, President Rashad al-Alimi approved the ruling, leaving the family anxious and fearful. “We haven’t slept since the presidential order was given. We continue to pray and hope for a miracle. We were told the death sentence would be carried out within a month of the president’s approval… I can’t imagine living without her,” Tomy shared with TOI.
Nimisha’s mother, Prema Kumari, who is in Yemen, has made a heartfelt appeal to the Indian government, urging them to take every possible step to save her daughter’s life. Tomy expressed regret for the alleged mistake and is seeking forgiveness, requesting that the victim’s family accept compensation in exchange for mercy. This could potentially save his wife’s life. Nimisha, who worked as a medical professional, had befriended the victim, Talal Abdo Mahdi, who allegedly mistreated her and wrongfully took her passport, leading to the fatal incident.
In prison, Nimisha has gained respect from inmates and authorities alike, celebrating her birthday with warmth and affection from her fellow prisoners. Tomy, who has been working extra hours to cover his daughter’s education, still clings to the hope of reuniting with his wife.
