The Uttar Pradesh government has cancelled the licence of Navjeevan Hospital in Bisrakh and initiated steps to seal the facility after its owner and two staff members were arrested for allegedly attempting to sell a newborn baby girl.
Baby sale racket exposed
The case came to light after a couple received a WhatsApp message claiming a newborn girl was “available for adoption.” When they contacted the number, they were allegedly told the baby could be handed over for ₹2.6 lakh.
Alerted by the complaint, Childline officials and police set up a trap. Two hospital workers — an operation theatre technician and a cleaner — were caught bringing the five-day-old baby to the agreed location and were arrested on the spot.
Owner and staff arrested
During interrogation, the accused reportedly claimed they were acting on the instructions of the hospital owner, who was subsequently arrested.
Police said the baby was born at the hospital days earlier, and investigations are ongoing to verify the circumstances of the birth and the identity of the mother.
Licence revoked, hospital to be sealed
Health authorities confirmed that the hospital’s licence has been revoked based on police findings. A three-member committee has been formed to examine hospital records, including delivery registers.
Officials will scrutinise patient details, addresses, and other documents to identify any irregularities or tampering.
Probe into wider irregularities
Authorities are investigating whether more such cases may have occurred. Efforts are also underway to locate another suspect linked to the case.
Baby under medical care
The rescued infant has been shifted to a government medical facility for examination and care. Officials said the child is safe and under observation.
Serious questions on healthcare oversight
The incident has raised concerns about illegal adoption networks and lapses in monitoring private healthcare facilities.
Authorities have assured strict action and a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and prevent similar crimes.
