THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a shocking case of medical negligence, a 51-year-old woman was administered an injection in the wrong eye at the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology in the capital, triggering outrage and prompting disciplinary action.

The patient, Azhoor Beevi from Beemapally, had been receiving treatment for blurred vision in her left eye. Doctors diagnosed swelling and advised an injection before June 3. Following protocol, her left eye was prepped for the procedure on Monday. However, in a grave error, the injection was administered to her right eye instead.

Dr S S Sujeesh, an Assistant Professor who oversaw the procedure, has been suspended pending inquiry. Hospital authorities acted after the woman’s family filed an immediate complaint with the superintendent and director.

The patient’s son, who handled logistical arrangements, claimed he paid ₹6,000 via Google Pay for the medicine based on the doctor’s guidance. The family was later told by staff that “nothing would happen” to the wrongly injected eye and asked to return on June 12, but the eye’s condition remains unchanged.

Authorities have assured that both the patient’s and her family’s statements will be recorded as part of a detailed probe into the lapse. The incident raises critical concerns about safety protocols, oversight, and accountability in medical institutions.
