Baisaran, once a scenic stretch of meadows nestled amid pine and kail forests, became the site of a gruesome terror attack on April 22. What started as a serene day for over 1,000 tourists turned into chaos as four to five heavily armed, Pakistan-backed terrorists opened fire indiscriminately, claiming 26 lives and injuring 20. Most victims were shot at close range in the head, suggesting the attack was meant to terrorize and drive visitors out of Kashmir.
At the time of the ambush, the area was teeming with tourists enjoying the spring bloom. The site, dubbed “mini–Switzerland,” is reachable only by foot or horse, a factor that may have influenced the attackers’ choice due to its isolation and lack of permanent security deployment. The assailants infiltrated from three directions and reportedly called out names before shooting, according to eyewitnesses.
Security agencies believe the terrorists likely escaped laterally through dense Kokernag forests, rather than attempting a treacherous climb toward Kishtwar ridge. A massive manhunt has been launched, with NIA teams and the Home Minister visiting the area. Sketches of suspects have been released based on survivor accounts.
The Resistance Front, linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility. Investigators confirmed the use of AK-47s and M4 rifles. The attack has disrupted the peak tourist season and shaken public confidence just months before the Amarnath Yatra.
