A 23-year-old woman, Tannu Singh, allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Indiranagar after reportedly being emotionally distressed when her husband allegedly called her a “monkey” in front of her sister, police said.
Tannu had married Rahul Srivastava about four years ago following a love relationship. Rahul works as an auto-rickshaw driver, while Tannu was reportedly learning modelling. The couple lived together with their young son.
Incident reportedly followed hurtful remark before family
According to preliminary information, the incident took place on Wednesday afternoon when Rahul, Tannu, her sister and their son were present at home. During what was described as casual joking, Rahul allegedly called Tannu a “monkey” in front of her sister. The remark reportedly caused deep emotional hurt.
Police sources said Tannu left the room silently after the incident. Rahul later stepped out to bring food. When he returned, family members were unable to get a response from Tannu despite repeated calls.
Found inside locked room, declared dead at hospital
Family members later found the room locked from inside. After neighbours gathered, she was found hanging. She was rushed to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
The post-mortem examination reportedly confirmed hanging as the cause of death. Police said further legal action would depend on the detailed investigation, including statements from family members.
Authorities and mental health experts have reiterated the importance of emotional sensitivity within families, stressing that words can have deep psychological impact, especially during vulnerable moments.
