Residents of Venkatadri Nagar, near Jeedimetla Industrial Estate in Hyderabad, were shocked on Monday evening as red-colored water gushed from a manhole, flooding streets and releasing a pungent stench. The spill left locals struggling to breathe and raised serious health and environmental concerns.
The incident is believed to be caused by hazardous chemicals discharged into the drainage system by industrial units, a claim supported by nearby warehouse owners. These industries are accused of routinely dumping chemical waste into public drains, posing a recurring threat to the community.
Officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Telangana Pollution Control Board (TPCB) inspected the site and promised strict action against violators. Samples of the contaminated water were collected, with initial findings indicating industrial waste as the cause.
This alarming event follows another case at Bapughat, where locals stopped a truck labeled “Hydrochloric Acid” from dumping industrial waste into the Musi River near the Ram Temple. The truck driver admitted to acting on instructions to dispose of chemicals illegally. Police have seized the vehicle and are investigating those responsible.
Residents have expressed frustration over repeated environmental violations and demanded stronger enforcement of pollution control laws.
Authorities have assured the public of measures to prevent further incidents.
