Mumbai: Customs authorities at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport have seized hydroponic marijuana worth nearly Rs 20 crore in two separate operations, officials said on Wednesday. Three passengers were arrested in connection with the cases.
The seizures took place on Monday and Tuesday. In the first case, a passenger arriving from Bangkok was apprehended with 11.922 kilograms of hydroponic weed, valued at about Rs 11.92 crore.
Second operation targets passengers from Hong Kong
In a separate operation, Customs officials intercepted two passengers arriving from Hong Kong. Examination of their checked-in baggage led to the recovery of 7.864 kilograms of hydroponic marijuana, valued at approximately Rs 7.86 crore.
Officials confirmed that the narcotic substance was concealed in the passengers’ trolley bags, highlighting the continued attempts to smuggle high-value drugs through international airports.
About hydroponic marijuana
Hydroponic weed is a potent and expensive form of ganja. Unlike traditional cultivation in soil, it is grown using water-based, nutrient-rich solutions, which allows for faster growth and higher potency. This makes it particularly attractive for illegal trade and fetches a high market value.
Customs authorities have emphasised that such interceptions play a critical role in curbing drug smuggling and preventing illegal narcotics from entering the domestic market. Investigations are ongoing to determine the broader network involved in these operations.
