New Delhi: Stating that the Gandhis had evaded income tax in 2011-12, the Income Tax Department has issued a Rs 100 Crore notice to Congress President Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday, January 9.

The amount of incomes in the case is related to the Associated Journals Limited. Rahul Gandhi had declared that his income was Rs 68.12 Lakh during 2011-12. However, sources revealed that the ‘escaped income’ over the declared assets is worth Rs 155 Crore.

The Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court that an order had been passed by the Income Tax department but any action against the Gandhis has been kept in abeyance as yet.

Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have filed a petition in SC, challenging the Delhi High Court’s September 10 order of reopening of the 2011 tax assessment case.

Former finance minister P Chidambaram who appeared in the Supreme court representing Sonia Gandhi, said that the tax liability of Rs 44 Crore against her had been wrongly imposed. Chidambaram also claimed that the extra Rs 100 Crore put on the Gandhis is unjustifiable.

However, the I-T department claims that the Gandhis did not declare the real amount in their income tax returns.
