Ice cream break becomes a life-saving moment in Kashmir terror attack
A dream getaway to Kashmir for Sumana Bhat and her colleagues turned into a nightmare on April 22. What was supposed to be a tranquil trip to Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley took a horrific turn when gunfire killed 26 people, including three from Bengaluru. A split-second pause for ice cream ended up saving the group’s lives.
Bhat, along with 16 others, was eager to explore the valley, often referred to as “Mini Switzerland.” Their decision to stop for a quick treat, however, delayed them just enough to avoid the brutal attack. As gunfire broke out, their horse guides urgently signaled them to retreat. The group made their way back to the hotel, their hearts heavy with fear.
At the same time, Stanley Gnanam’s group also found themselves in a similar situation. Two members of their group, Madhusudhan Somisetty and his wife, chose to stay behind while the others went for lunch. Their decision to linger saved their lives when the shooting began. Amid the chaos, local Kashmiri vendors and pony owners acted quickly, helping the tourists find safety.
After a tense escape, the survivors reached a police base where local men offered them water and shelter. Gnanam, deeply moved by the experience, shared how it reminded him to never take life or loved ones for granted. The attack left Bengaluru grieving, and the tragedy highlights the fragility of life.
